What is the Dyneema mentioned in the making of this throwline?
Put in simple terms, Dyneema is the worlds strongest fibre. It is made from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (or UHMWPE for short!). The finished product will offer the maximum strength and minimum weight possible.
It is manufactured using a gel spinning process where fibres are drawn, heated, elongated, and finally cooled. The stretching and spinning which takes place leads to molecular alignment, high crystallization, and low density. Dyneema has an extremely long molecular chain that transfers the load more effectively to the polymer backbone. This enables the finished product to offer better strength at a lower weight than all alternatives. On a weight for weight basis, Dyneema is up to 15% stronger than steel and 40% stronger than aramids.
It is also resistant to moisture, chemicals and UV rays, as well as being able to float on water.
