Excerpt taken from the publication – “This leaflet covers the safe working practices to be followed when using a petrol-powered top-handled chainsaw for arboricultural off-ground work. Tree work requiring the use of a chainsaw should only be carried out by a trained and competent climber who has experience in chainsaw use, or by a trainee under supervision who is competent using a chainsaw on the ground.

You can use this leaflet, along with the chainsaw manufacturer’s handbook, as part of your risk assessment to help identify the controls to put in place when using a top-handled chainsaw.

You must assess the effect of the site and the weather as well as following this guidance. Operators who do not observe good working practices with chainsaws in trees can cause serious accidents and fatalities. All operators must have had appropriate training in how to operate the machine and how to carry out the tasks required (see HSE leaflet INDG317 Chainsaws at work).

Top-handled chainsaws are only suitable for use off the ground. Operators must use rear-handled saws when working on the ground.

At Briants we offer a Local Delivery Service at very competitive rates. All Local Deliveries are made on our own fleet of vehicles by one of our professional drivers. Orders can be placed in store, over the phone or through our website. If ordering through our website, please select local delivery at checkout and the correct delivery charge (if applicable) will be assigned based on your postcode. Please note delivery of outdoor items such as fencing are ‘curb-side’. For fencing or building materials, please let us know if you require notification in advance of delivery, if we receive no instruction, goods will be delivered asap and left in a suitable place at your property. If we are delivering items such as garden machinery which can’t be reasonably left outside, then we will always make contact prior to delivery.

Items ordered for COURIER DELIVERY OR POSTAGE

Orders placed Monday to Friday before 2pm will generally be shipped within 24 hours where possible, however there may be instances where this is not possible. The carrier used is determined by the order weight/volume and value of the order. Small, low value items will be shipped via Royal Mail. Large volumes or high value orders will be shipped via DPD, Fedex or other courier, on a tracked and signed for 48 hour delivery service (weekdays only). There may be some instances where circumstances beyond our control mean that courier/Post Office isn’t running to time, such as broken down vehicles or heavy traffic etc. On some occasions when customers are not home the couriers may return goods to us, deliver to a neighbour or a local pickup point at the discretion of the courier company. A signature/photograph will be required for items that are not posted via Royal Mail standard post so please provide a contact telephone number and delivery instructions where appropriate.

Items marked as ‘Restricted Delivery’

Some items on our website will be marked as ‘restricted delivery’, this means the item can only be shipped to UK mainland addresses and we will be unable to ship to Scottish Highlands, Ireland, Isle of Wight as well as other UK Islands etc.

Items NOT Available for Shipping

Some items are not available for shipping, for example gas cylinders or pre mix fuels. These items can however be purchased in store and must be transported from site by the consumer. Likewise, bulky items such as fence panels are only available for click and collect or local delivery (on our own vehicles) and due to the physical size of the product can’t be shipped UK wide by our courier.

Chainsaw Safety

As well as being a useful and effective tool, a chainsaw is a potentially dangerous piece of equipment. Complacency or incorrect use will greatly increase the probability of anything from a ‘near-miss’, to the worst case scenario of a fatal accident. When you purchase a new chainsaw from us, or any other chainsaw dealer it is absolutely crucial that safety is at the forefront of your mind, before, during and after use. 

If you purchase a chainsaw from us at Briants and are local enough to collect from store we will assemble, run and test the saw before handing it over in operational state. In addition a demonstration will be given by an experienced member of our staff on the start procedure of the saw . 

If you live in an area of the UK where it’s not practical to get to us to collect in person, then we are able to ship some chainsaw models via a courier. In this instance, the saw will be delivered to you as it is delivered to us by Stihl. That is in a box, requiring the bar and chain to be fitted. The unit will ship dry so fuel and 2-stroke oil mix, plus chain oil (not supplied unless stated) will need to be added to the saw prior to use. The fuel to oil ratio is critical, please follow the guidelines in the owners manual or consult us if you are unsure. Stihl 2-stroke, 2-Mix and 4-Mix engine use a 50:1 ratio i.e. 100ml of Stihl 2-stroke oil per 5 litres of unleaded petrol. Assembly and start up should only be done by a competent person who has previous experience of both using and assembling a chainsaw and is confident with garden machinery. Chainsaw courses are available at all experience levels across the UK, so if you have minimal or no experience it is (in our opinion) essential to seek professional training before attempting to assemble and use your new saw. An internet search should be done to find a suitable training service in your area. For those local to ourselves we highly recommend Vale Training.

GRANBERG Alaskan Sawmill – Planking Chainsaw Mill – MKIV

Alaskan Sawmill

Alaskan sawmill for planking lengths of timber. The Granberg MkIV mill is available to buy in multiple lengths to suit many timber and chainsaw combinations. Simply clamp on any size chainsaw bar (except one shorter than 5″ and some narrow bars). When attaching the chainsaw mill to your chainsaw, you will lose 2″ to 4″ of width of cut over whichever is shorter, your bar or the mill itself. Ideally the optimum configuration is to have an Alaskan sawmill which is the same length as your chainsaw bar if possible.

We will ship these Alaskan mills to UK mainland addresses. (We are unable to send to Highlands, Islands and Ireland).

Alaskan Sawmill MKIV

This versatile, heavy duty chainsaw mill is accurately used to cut planks & beams. It clamps onto your chainsaw bar with absolutely no drilling required. It is both lightweight & portable, enabling user to mill lumber wherever the tree falls. This newer version is now manufactured with CNC machined billet end brackets. These are much more accurate, far simpler to adjust, create less vibration than the die cast versions & they are (dare we say it) virtually unbreakable. Absolutely ideal for planking, whether you are a homeowner, woodworker or a professional arborist.

Top tips and ways to get the most out of chainsaw milling

  • Keep the chain sharp most people require some form of guide to get the chain perfect tooth length the same, angle the same, depth gauges consistent. Nearly all issues we come across always come down to the chain – you can get away with all sorts of mistakes when cross cutting timber – not so with milling. The best tool on the market is still the Granberg Precision Grinder.
  • Wedge the cut so it does not trap the bar don’t wedge to high but keep the cut open so the saw can cut without the chain getting trapped.
  • Get you first cut straight because if you don’t you will have issues all the way through the log! If the top cut is not flat put your first cut rails back on the log and re saw a board so that the log is now flat.
  • Rest the saw down the log – particularly in hot conditions let the saw idle for 30 seconds every 1m you cut. This allows the saw to get rid of some of the heat build up.
  • At the end of the log do not switch saw straight off. Remove from log gently rev and allow chain to remove any sawdust trapped in the bar. Allow saw to idle 1 minute before you start cutting again or before you turn off.
  • Do not run your saw out of fuel – always make sure there is fuel in the tank/goods levels of charge on the battery – if you keep allowing the saw to run out of fuel/battery completely you will have idling and possibly even other issues later in the saw’s life.
  • Do not force the mill to cut it should cut without undue pressure so if it is not cutting then pull it out the log and assess the reasons.

The Silky Zubat pole saw is a lightweight, state of the art, telescopic pole saw with an oval shaped aluminium alloy pole which offers both strength and precise control. This is a very versatile saw with a wide range of uses including trimming, pruning, gardening, forestry and arboriculture.

The telescopic design has two locking systems – a spring loaded locking button and friction clamps which work in tandem to ensure a strong and stable pole extension.

These lightweight poles can be used from the ground or climbed with to gain greater pruning range without the use of heavier, more cumbersome equipment.

The Zubat pole saw is sold as a 1.2m pole saw with an extension range of 1.75-2.65m or a 1800 pole saw with an extension range of 2.35-3.85m .The pole is constructed from an aluminium oval shaped shaft for maximum strength, minimum flex and as little weight as possible.

The saw has a curved blade with a standard teeth ratio of 7.5 teeth per 30mm.

The Zubat uses the same blade as the Zubat Professional 330mm hand saw. The Zubat blades are fully interchangeable offering added flexibility. A black rigid-plastic blade guard is included, which locks onto the blade for extra protection. The base poles have pole-end shock absorbers and a comfortable rubberised over-grip which ensures good hold and control.

Zubat blades cannot be re-sharpened due to the use of electro-impulse hardening in the manufacturing process. Replacement blades are available and only require the removal of two bolts to effect the blade change. All other parts are also replaceable.

Silky Hayauchi pole saw is widely used by both professional and home users alike. They have robust aluminium alloy poles that are oval in shape and provide better control over the direction of the blade. This stability is especially useful when pruning branches which are higher up the tree. It also helps give strength and rigidity to the poles so reducing the chance of the poles bending during use. This saw is available in different lengths up to a maximum full extension of 6.3m.

The telescopic design has two locking systems – a spring loaded locking button and friction clamps which work in tandem to ensure a strong and stable pole extension.

The Hayauchi Pole Saw comes with a 390mm curved blade and fairly aggressive teeth ratio of 6.5 teeth per 30mm and is razor sharp to tear through branches with minimal effort.

It utilises the Silky 4-Retsume teeth technology – ideal for the toughest pruning jobs. The blade can be adjusted to two different angles for lower or higher cutting.

The blades have a lower sickle for undercutting bark and removing epicormics with a clean cut to avoid damaging the tree and an upper sickle for cutting vines – these sickles also help prevent the blade slipping off the limb.

The blade on the Silky Hayauchi comes with a protective black rigid guard (scabbard) for extra protection. The base pole includes a pole end shock absorber to help protect the pole when it’s resting on the ground.

We can can also supply replacement blades for any Silky saw in our range.

If you want to convert your Silky Hayauchi pole saw to a lopper, this can be easily done by purchasing the Sintung Lopper head which has been specifically designed by Silky to be attached to the top of the Hayauchi Pole. Simply remove the blade head and replace it with the Sintung Lopper attachment.

The Stihl MSA160 CB cordless chainsaw is part of the professional battery powered Stihl garden machinery range.

Battery operated chainsaws, as well as other tools, are growing in popularity among domestic and professional gardeners alike, as the technology and performance continues to go from strength to strength. The obvious environmental advantages over petrol chainsaws is self evident in terms of emissions but also noise levels when the machine is in use. Being cordless there is no cable to negotiate around when cutting wood as there would be when using an electric chainsaw. The cutting power of this chainsaw is extremely impressive, and will be the ideal tool for cutting firewood, general landscaping maintenance and sawing timber in enclosed spaces (due to lack of exhaust emissions).

The operation of this chainsaw couldn’t really be any simpler. The battery slots into the charger (mains powered), then once charged, slot it into the saw and away you go. A 12” guide bar and chain come included with the saw and chain oil will also be required (not included) to ensure correct lubrication and prevent damage to the chainsaw. This cordless lawn mower has been designed for small domestic gardens between 300m² and 400m² . This is approximately between 1.5 and 2  tennis courts in size. (dependant on which battery is used).

How long does it take to charge the battery for the RMA 235?

The manufacturer specify that if using the recommended AK20 battery a full charge (from flat) will take approximately 150 minutes when using the recommended charger. An 80% charge can be achieved in just over 100 minutes.

How to use a tree felling wedge

A Tree felling wedge is a valuable piece of equipment for professional forestry workers and arborists. The main benefit is that it will help to control the direction in which the tree will fall. As always working in a safe manner is the most important part of tree work, and having a selection of wedges to hand should be a given.

A cut is usually made in the side of the tree and then the wedge is placed point side in. Then use a hammer or similar to firmly strike the wedge into the tree.
